Your Conversation Is Private by Design With Clear Limits

At Phone a Friend, privacy is foundational to how this service is designed and delivered. We understand that many people who seek conversation value discretion, boundaries, and the ability to speak freely without concern for exposure or judgment.

That said, privacy has important and necessary limits, which are outlined below.

What Privacy Means Here

Your conversations are one-on-one and private. We do not share, sell, or distribute personal information. Conversations are not used for marketing, training, or promotion.

You are never required to share more than you are comfortable sharing. Our role is to listen…not to collect or retain personal details beyond what is necessary to schedule your conversation.

Important Limits to Privacy

Phone a Friend cannot maintain privacy in situations that involve immediate risk, harm, or illegal activity.

Privacy may be limited if:

  • You express an intention to harm yourself

  • You express an intention to harm others

  • You disclose involvement in a serious crime

  • There is a reasonable concern for immediate safety

In these situations, we may take appropriate steps to protect life and safety, which can include contacting emergency services or appropriate authorities.

Not a Crisis or Emergency Service

Phone a Friend is not a crisis intervention service.

If you are in immediate danger, considering self-harm, or experiencing an emergency, please contact local emergency services or call/text 988 (in the United States) for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
